The pig dissection was a learning experience that allowed students to distinguish the many organs and organ systems in the pig’s body and, ultimately, the organs and organ systems of the human body. Although the pig fetus was larger than what was expected, the procedure went well and all the necessary parts of the pig were visible. Fetal pigs are unborn pigs used in elementary as well as advanced biology classes as objects for , as a mammalian species, provide a good specimen for the study of physiological systems and processes due to the similarities between many pig and human organs.

With the chart given above under procedure 1, we determined that our fetal pig was approximately 55 days, as the length of the fetal pig was 37 cm long. 3a. The function of the umbilical cord is to transport nutrients to the fetal pigs from the mother pig. 3b. Two blood vessels were seen within the umbilical cord. 4.

FETAL PIG DISSECTION In this lab exercise you will open the abdominal-pelvic and thoracic cavities of a fetal pig and identify its major organs. Remember you are dissecting not butchering. The goal is for you to identify all of the structures described herein via a careful and thorough dissection. Do not remove any organs.
